Can we use pieces of broken concrete to raise a space before paving it with pavers??

we have a large space in our backyard that we are paving. it is too low right now and was want to raise it about 18 inches total, including the finishing pavers.
is it ok to raise this by filling it with large pieces of concrete? (about 8X8 inches wide by 4 inches thick)
we are planning on leaving 5 inches of space to add gravel and then sand on top of it before the pavers.
thanks for the input
julie

Answer:
Yes, it's done all the time. Just don't leave any air under the concrete. I usually just take the end of my shovel handle and tamp down the dirt really tight around the concrete, it's a bit time consuming but it's cheaper and more effective than a roller filled with water.
