How do I cover a concrete patio with pea gravel in a style similar to the pathways in Parisian parks?
I have visited parks in Paris that have compacted sand beneath gravel. Can this be done directly on top of an existing concrete patio? Will the existing drainage be adequate?
Answer: To be done ontop of an existing concrete slab could be quite difficult to achieve. This process is called exposed aggregate surfacing. It is normally achieved with chemical retarding agents. The only way I could think of doing this would be to have a contractor perform an overlay on your existing slab, and somehow scatter pea gravel evenly over the surface, or to mix it into the overlay product and then utilize a retarding agent to expose the aggregate. This process might not be practical, but it is my best educated guess.
