Any secrets to pouring a concrete patio without too many cracks developing over time?

I plan to rent a mixer - would ordering from a concrete company be less expensive (two 12 foot diameter round patios)? Houston area.

Answer:
I would first make sure you had a good footing under where your going to pour the concrete. Level- sand or gravel than compacted to firm it. I would also put some wire in the cement when pouring it. Usually I think people lay the wire first and pull it up part way into the cement -but not so it shows. Local building supply companies can probably advise you best on the type of mix and thickness to also help reduce cracking.
