Ultra-Thin Whitetopping
Ultra-thin Whitetopping (UTW) is a bonded, fiber reinforced portland cement concrete overlay, which can be used for road surface course where traditional paving materials have failed due to shoving, rutting, or general deterioration. UTW will provide an economical, durable, long lasting pavement surface. The underlying road course will greatly determine the longevity of the UTW.
Constructed using locally manufactured ready-mixed concrete, UTW offers today's maintenance manager a better choice for intersection and road repaving. Typically, UTW mixes are designed for fast track repairs, allowing the roadway to be reopened to traffic within 24 hours of placement. The UTW mix features high amounts of cementitious materials, as well as three pounds of fibrillated, synthetic fiber per cubic yard.
Placement of UTW is as easy as 1, 2, 3. First the existing roadway is milled to a uniform depth of 4" (1/2") and cleaned. Secondly, the UTW concrete is placed directly on the milled asphalt surface using a conventional vibratory screed to consolidate the concrete and bring the concrete to final grade. The fresh concrete may be finished with a tined, broomed, or burlap dragged finish. The UTW concrete is jointed using an early entry, or green cut saw. Joint spacing is usually laid out in three-foot squares.
Finally, the roadway is re-opened to traffic within 24 hours of placement, with a minimum compressive strength of 3,000 psi. Painting of lines, if necessary, can be completed prior to re-opening. Additionally, traffic control sensors can be placed directly on the milled surface, below the UTW concrete. In this way, they are protected from damage by outside forces. Because it is a rigid pavement, the UTW will not rut, shove, or washboard.
Since 1991, UTW has become increasingly more popular with cities and towns across the US because of its ease of placement, durability and excellent performance.
