Pervious Concrete is a concrete mix of coarse aggregate and Portland cement using no sand. It is intended for use as an open-graded drainage material. Elimination of fine aggregate creates 15-25% air void structure allowing for drainage of water though material. Drainage rates vary with coarse aggregate size, but commonly fall into the range of 2 - 18 gallons per minute, per cubic foot.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers Pervious Concrete a permeable material. It allows water to return to the ground and recharges aquifer. It also minimizes the need for storm water retention ponds and underground drainage work for developers.
Pervious Concrete is placed using forms and leveled with screeding. It is lightly compacted with a vibrating plate tamper or small roller and requires no finishing. Jointing is optional.
Pervious Concrete is recommended for use in light duty parking lots, car paths, sidewalks, driveways, and greenhouse and nursery sites. It is also recommended for slope stabilization.
